This actually seems to be related to an issue that our very own David Kirkby ran into during a similar GalSim related installation of boost. His posted solution is here:

I am working on implementing it now.

I understand that DM doesn't want to support every python distribution out there. However it might be nice to have an installation FAQ where this problem and solution is mentioned.
