Our stuff should not be broken by a homebrew installation, which deliberately plays nicely with the O/S.  That's not to say that there aren't things that homebrew does that won't break an install, but I think we need to diagnose rather than simply say don't do that.

Can you find the compiler line for timer.c, add a -C -E, and see what's going on?
