Dustin's suggestion changed matters - a bit.
    setup -v obs_sdss
led to about 30 lines similar to
    Setting up: obs_sdss  Flavor: Linux64    Version: 7.3.2.1+1
which seemed like a good start.

Elated by this progress, I tried
    > ./bin/demo.sh
    Setting up: astrometry_net_data  Flavor: Linux64    Version: 
LOCAL:/home/dgm/lsst_dm_stack_demo-7.2.0.0/astrometry_net_data
    ImportError: numpy.core.multiarray failed to import
which was followed by about 20 lines of traceback.

Random rummaging shows that while I have no
    numpy.core.multiarray
I do have things like
 
./Linux64/external/numpy/1.8.0+1/lib/python/numpy/core/tests/test_multiarray.py

Given that I don't speak Python, I am unable to figure out
how to proceed.
